David Pons is a Senior Sports Technician in Soccer, and Uefa pro license in Soccer, he is a self-made coach, who withdrew early as a footballer from the pitch due to a motorcycle accident, which caused him continuous knee injuries. From that moment, he went through all football categories, until reaching the second division and always looking for individual and group performance and improvement in his teams.
This method is my contribution to the world of soccer. Which offers a more professional way of facing performance in individual training, in groups, and in training with the entire team, which leads to a global improvement of the entire club, all its coaches and therefore its players, which in the end and in the end they are the most important thing.
Interview with David Pons, founder of the training method “The Pons Method”
How did the project of “The Pons Method” come about?
It arose in Qatar, when I visited the Aspire academy, I liked the facilities, and I understood that questions began to arise that made me reflect on my experiences and knowledge about my soccer language. For a long time I had been thinking about how to improve the training structure but with the rhythm of daily work in each club, in each different country, I did not have enough peace of mind, until I finished my work in Thailand and I had time in the middle of a Island to reflect, and the truth is that I am very proud of this method that I understand helps many people in the world of football.
What is the Pons Method about?
It is an innovative method that revolutionizes soccer training and will probably do so in other sports, the method starts from simplicity, from the small details? But, like soccer, it is a method that deals with soccer training as a whole, as a whole. Finally, this training, which can be from analytical to global, is contextualized with the tactical component, with invaluable help from some panels, each time they will have adequate and high-tech software, which will be able to contribute efficiency and productivity to individual training. , semi-collective and group, with a structured way of training that over time will become an essential method in soccer and many other sports.
We understand that by pursuing results many times we lose the prism of what high performance is, but in a high percentage this performance will always be in the investment in the individual training of soccer players, in which we had not made the case that it required, Due to the lack of a method like this, capable of reeling off the game without losing efficiency and productivity in training, time is limited, rich, it must be fun and enjoyable for the player, and it must be fun and real, that the player sees which is an investment because this kind of training brings you closer to performance.
This tool will serve as an exponential improvement in group sports in the coming decades, the principle of specificity will become essential, with the invaluable help of the latest technologies.
When and how do you develop your Pons Method?
It has been a long time since March 2020 that I was finalizing the project, but it was not until July 25, 2020 that it came to light, and I distributed it to all the clubs and federations in the world, the confinement gave me the final push to confine myself in Thailand , and delve into a need in the world of soccer, individual, group and group improvement in soccer, with a proven methodology that provides many improvements in different areas of training, but above all synergies between departments that help to approach the high sports performance.
What is the main obstacle that you have encountered when sharing this method?
Maybe reach out to people and get them to know about my work. It is a competitive sector in which many professionals do not live or share knowledge as in other sports, I do not live football like that, and I was forced to share this method, make it reach the last corner of the world.
And what is your value proposition to differentiate yourself from other methods?
This method has so many improvements in training that it is difficult not to see its improvements, but the best thing it has is that it can be used in any category, and more sports will use it, because this method is future, I am waiting for companies to contact of high technology so that they make a relevant and adequate software to bring even more performance to this method, and make the panels with high technology, we are talking that this method will help the coach to help the players face the performance in an exponential way of a structured form, and increasingly technological.
How has the Pons Method evolved at this time?
Well, since I started it in March it has been a method, which was transforming and shaping itself, I saw it clearly, then not so much, until little by little it was transformed through questions that I was asking myself, until Getting to improve almost all parts of training, for me it is a total training revolution, which will undoubtedly go further. For me, it was a pleasant surprise to be able to feel proud of being able to help so many people with such a simple method that in turn becomes so enormous and essential.
What is your goal with this Pons Method?
My goal is that the method can help many clubs, coaches, federations, and performance academies, anywhere in the world, so that they can face the game model of their coaches, in a more structured, more effective, more real way. . And that the player totally benefits from this Pons Method.
“I will accompany clubs, federations, if they deem it appropriate, and if I am not training (which is always my priority), my intention is, when the pandemic ends and we are vaccinated, to take advantage of the times that I find myself without a team, so that clubs and federations in the world can hire me a week to hold lectures in the morning and practice in the afternoon to face a global training program for all their coaches to improve training structures in a global way with the Pons Method as the main artist of the week, clarity, methodology and knowledge to focus and improve the coaches of the club and federations so that in this way, the players benefit from this weekly seminar which at the end of it all of them will be able to face the performance in their clubs in a way, clear, practical and systematic.
What do you think many clubs and federations around the world can improve on, David?
Well, I have been and enjoyed sharing my football in different countries, and there is talent in all of them, they all have very good things and not so good things, but we would say that the shortcomings are always born from the base, they lack basic, small details that later when They are professionals, they are more difficult to face, but not impossible and even less so with this Pons Method, which is capable of filling lacks precisely in the base because it is totally focused on the small details. In some countries there is a lack of discipline, in others basic basic concepts are lacking, others decision-making must be improved through a more real, more tactical work, and in almost all of them it is necessary to understand that football must have a very important specificity and be what more similar to the competition possible, you still see hundreds and hundreds of clubs going from physical preparation to tactics or to technique, and it is not the correct way from my point of view, to face performance, training time is limited and with this Method Pons among other things allows coaches to optimize time in the best possible way. It is my desire to accompany and guide clubs, coaches, sports directors, to face their sports projects in a structured way, increasingly methodological, with a clarity of ideas, important so as not to lose the course of performance. Soccer is a whole, and as Cesar Luis Menotti said, “He who only knows about soccer … or about soccer knows.” Today this phrase takes on total relevance, even more so.
What is the main obstacle that you have encountered when sharing this method?
Perhaps reaching people with the necessary knowledge to face the method in a functional way, everything innovative costs and in football even more. It is probably the most competitive sport in which many professionals find it difficult to share information, open up to new ways and work methodologies. Soccer is like life. It is played in open spaces, it is open to change, only the VAR, it has changed everything.
Soccer is change, transformation, learning, like life itself.
And what is the value proposition of the Pons Method?
The value proposition is to be a good enough method for anyone who wants to update to use it, anyone who sees the method as another tool to improve their weekly planning. More than a method, I like to call it a tool, because it is what it is, a work tool, a performance tool, highly productive and that improves many areas of training in soccer and will do so in other sports soon more if possible with the introduction technology in the Pons Method.
Beyond winning championships, I have always focused on helping players face high performance, and of course also on improving people, because I realized year after year that when I helped them become better people, I got better players with a language of soccer and of common life and with a higher capacity to compete. That is why this method is a breath of tranquility for the security of the club that has one more tool to carry out a job in the club from top to bottom, that is, reeling off the game of the first level team, to reel off concepts of the game by categories, from more complicated to simpler, these game concepts are transmitted in a more leisurely, more specific, more individual way, more from less to more, totally progressive, as every frequency of methodical and structured learning should be . Without stopping the continuity of group training, with this tool we have an indispensable time from which we can improve mental, physical, technical-tactical training, at the same time. Like what this sport is, as a whole.
How has the Pons Method evolved at this time?
The Pons Method improves the team’s game patterns by extracting from the game model, exercises through analytical, global exercises, circuits, reduced games, combined plays or creative play forms, in which the coach extracts exercises from the competition, on the concepts of the game or how to fight or counter the rival.
We carry out this Pons Method, by means of an improvement in the individual work methodology, then by groups or by lines, later with the whole group with a global training methodology, which we will then take to a conditioned match and then to the competition. And then repeat it if it comes out as we want.
This method also optimizes the soccer player’s rehabilitation work and gets the player to join the team in a more confident, more prepared, safer, more real way.
The Pons Method improves the understanding of the coach’s game model by the players, this pandemic that has had to resume players, I just want to ask a question …
Who would not have liked to have a work methodology that would allow you to train, as a whole, with a single player, during this pandemic that in many countries you could only do individual work and that would also allow you to disclose your game model In the shortest time possible, we have all realized, with the stoppage of the competitions and the subsequent resumption as coaches, that they had obtained performance in the medium and short term, they have not known how to do it in the short space of time, that is why the Item of not only explaining your game model in the shortest possible time, but also that your players assimilate it and put it into practice should be a priority for any coach and club in the world that wants to face performance, although we understand that clubs to have patience to implement projects, in clubs, that go beyond taking a coach and implanting his methodology, there must be a project capable of leaving a legacy, an inheritance that is capable of making the entity feel proud, even improving it in all aspects.
At the same time, this kind of systematic training allows, not only that a player who joins the club in the middle of the season to understand better and more quickly the game model of the coach, of the club, but, at the same time, improves the The performance of the coach who starts at a club in the middle of the season will also be able to convey his game model better and more quickly, facts that have been decisive for learning in this pandemic.
This method also improves the training of non-summoned players, being able to perform more real, more specific, more competitive exercises, thus ensuring that the player understands that he should not lower his arms and that he must continue to improve to get more minutes, performing totally specific training for your position or positions in the field. The principle of individuality is the key in this Pons Method and motivates the player to return to starting as soon as possible.
This Pons Method also facilitates synergies between departments and, of course, the scouting department, which becomes essential to carry out exhaustive analysis of the recording of individual, semi-group sessions, and with the team, with two clear objectives, one is the improvement of the concepts of the game, and the other fight and counteract rivals, for this the work of this department becomes fundamental. The method grows more every day, I hope I have been able to contribute my grain of sand to the improvement of training structures in the world of football and that many clubs, coaches, sports directors can take advantage of the method, I will always be available to Any questions if time and work allow me.
